Early Literacy / Writing Skills
We will continue on with our efforts to strengthen phonemic awareness by focusing on words that rhyme. To do this, I will be using Classical Nursery rhymes, as well as stories written by Dr. Seuss (Many Dr. Seuss books are considered classical Literature). We will also learn the difference between words that rhyme and words that begin with the same letter sound. Learning the above two concepts are important steps toward learning to read.
Math
We have begun to solidify our recognition and writing of numbers 1 – 10. We will begin to lay the foundation for a better understanding of the addition and subtraction process and, therefore, provide the students with the foundation of “previous knowledge” which allows them to recall the basic understanding of Arithmetic Operations which we learned back in November! (Previous knowledge is defined as information that a child can draw from when formally learning the concept in the first year(s) of elementary school.)
Spiritual Development
During the season of Lent and Easter we will use our seeds curriculum to guide us through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Though young children are not able to grasp the meaning of Jesus’ passion and death, they can understand that the life of Jesus shows them how gently and patiently God cares for them.
Pre-3
Spiritual Development: As we continue through November we will learn a lot about being thankful and thanking God for all he has created. Our Seeds lessons guide us through the weekly Gospel and Jesus’ teachings.
Language and Literacy: As we learn our letters we learn “Letter chants” which provide a common nursery rhyme tune and the letter being learned.
Writing: Using the Handwriting without Tears curriculum, wood piece play and catchy songs get the children comfortable with terms like “Big and Little Lines, Big and Little Curve”. This will allow for an easier transition when teaching them how to write each letter. Building with the wood pieces makes for a fun and interactive learning environment, with little stress on writing our letters before we are ready.
